A Message from The BHS Parent Resource Center

Greetings,

The Parent Resource Center would like to welcome back students, parents, teachers, administrators and staff for our 2006 - 2007 school year. Parents it's that time of year again, wow! how time flies. I hope that each family a wonderful summer, however is time for us to roll up our sleeves and get busy for the current school year. The Parent Resource Center is entering its seventh year on site at BHS and what a tremendous ride it has been.

What is the Parent Resource Center?

The Parent Resource Center opened its doors in 1999 as a direct outgrowth of the Diversity Project, a four-year study led by Dr. Pedro Noguera and a group of students at the University of California to analyze and overcome Berkeley High's low achievement among students of color. The study also addressed the need to bring more disenfranchised parents, particularly those of color, into the school's decision-making processes. The Parent Center is a place where parents can come and feel welcome, have a sense of belonging and be reassured that their ideas, concerns and issues are valued. It is a safe environment for growing, learning and connecting. The core services of the center include; Information Dissemination, Referrals/Resources, Parent Advocacy, Family Health and Wellness, Life Skills workshops and drop in availability.

The Parent Resource Center has evolved into a hub of activity for the whole school. It provides an array of services for parents and students. It is where parents go for referrals, contacts, parent advocacy and advice. Student services include low-cost Bart transportation tickets, lost and found, mentor programs, student emergency funds, school supplies and assistance with academic support. Last but not least parents and students are listened to.

Throughout the school year Life Skill workshops will be presented on Saturday mornings from 10:00 - 12:00 noon. Some of the topics will include: "On Track for Graduation", "How to find Money ton Get into Great colleges" Forum on Teens, Drugs and Anger" When Blue is the Blues (Depression), Conference (Race and the Plight of African American Males). These are just a sample of the workshops to be scheduled for the 2006 - 2007 school year. Please check the e-tree and Daily Bulletin for these events. Scheduled events will also be posted in the Parent Resource Center.
